With respect to your last paragraph, it is important to note that while there is little evidence that probiotics in general are useful, there is evidence that specific strains can be useful, eg, Saccharomyces Boulardii for C Difficile recurrence. This is not to say that other strains are not useful, just that they have not been proven so yet.
